Golf Cart Battery Charging Tips for Winter

One of the biggest investments you will have in your electric golf cart is the set of deep cycle batteries. They cost several hundred dollars and they do need to be replaced every couple of years. However, there are practices that you can implement to help extend the life of your batteries so that they will last longer.

Conversely there are things you may be doing that are going to shorten the life of your batteries, meaning that you will need to replace them sooner rather than later.

Dangers of Not Charging

Let's talk about the winter months when you are probably not using your golf cart very frequently. When a golf cart just sits in the garage, without being used, the batteries are actually discharging.

Meaning if they sit for too long without charging, the golf cart won't start when the days start to warm up because there is no charge left in the batteries. Avoid the hassle of charging dead golf cart batteries by keeping your batteries fully charged through out the winter.

Zach, my friend at Affordable Golf Carts recommends:

1. Charge your batteries at least 1x/month.

2. Plug your golf cart battery charger directly into the outlet. Not into a surge protector and not into any extension cord.

3. Plug your battery charger into an outlet that's not being shared with something else - like a refrigerator.

4. Keep charging the batteries until the charger turns off.

Do not turn it off because you see that the charge indicator is full. New battery chargers are "smart" and programmed so that when all of the deep cycle batteries are charged, the charger will automatically turn off.

Save yourself some money. Use these simple tips to keep your golf cart batteries in good shape and lasting you a long time.
